H is for Hall Crowns: A Simple Solution for Kids' Cavities

As a grown-up, you want your child’s smile to stay healthy and bright. But sometimes, even with great brushing and flossing, cavities happen. When a cavity is too big for a filling, a pediatric dentist might recommend a crown. This may sound intimidating, but we’ve got some kid-friendly techniques up our sleeve to make it a lot less scary.

What is the Hall Crown Technique?

Using the Hall Crown Technique, we fit a stainless steel cap over a baby tooth to protect it. Unlike traditional crowns, the Hall Crown Technique intentionally seals the cavity inside, often with no drilling needed. By sealing the cavity inside, we cut off the the cavity-causing bacteria from its food source. The bacteria dies, the cavity process stops, and the tooth is restored! Viola! No additional treatment is needed.

Sometimes, if he is confident that kids will tolerate it, Dr. Pete will modify this technique slightly. He may remove some of the cavity and re-shape the biting surface of the tooth slightly, so that the bite feels normal afterward.

Why Use a Hall Crown?

  • No Shots, No (or minimal) Drilling – No numbing, making visits stress-free.

  • Stops Cavities in Their Tracks – Seals decay inside, arresting the cavity and fixing the tooth.

  • Long-Lasting Protection – Stays in place until the tooth naturally falls out.

What to Expect

  1. We check the tooth and size a crown to fit.

  2. We place the crown with a little dental cement (or tooth glue).

  3. Your child adjusts—it might feel a little different at first. Right away, it can feel tight, like having a popcorn hull stuck between your teeth. The crowned tooth may also feel tall when biting, but the bite will self-adjust in a couple of days to a couple of weeks time.

Caring for a Hall Crown

Just brush and floss as usual! Avoid sticky foods like caramel, taffy, and Jolly Ranchers to keep it secure. If it does come off, contact Good Life Smiles right away, so we can help put it back on.

A Simple, Stress-Free Fix

Hall Crowns offer a quick, pain-free solution, always without numbing, and often without drilling. If your child needs one, we’ll make sure they’re comfortable and confident in their care.
